bestuvoate: Cut Copy + Midnight Juggernauts

Aussie Aussie Aussie!!! Oy Oy Oy!!! It has been noted both here and on countless other music blogs about the blatant remix inbreeding that the Australians did this year. And who can blame them? Cut Copy, Midnight Juggernauts, Presets, Van She, Miami Horror, Bag Raiders, Ladyhawke, and more all did each other right.

Cut Copy however might be the best known, and most successful of the bunch, and their first single off this year's wildly successful In Ghost Colours got the remix treatment from Midnight Juggernauts. The fellow Melbourne outfit IMO did the best rendition of "Hearts on Fire" all year. The cosmic synth work and astral-disco beats are all staple aspects of Midnight Juggernauts. And while I was slightly disappointed in the lack of diversity in Dystopia, their sound definitely works well in remixes of Cut Copy, Sebastian Tellier, and even Dragonette.

And let me just say something... I read a lot of blogs and their opinions of this song, and for every smug writer that disses this song for not being a 'floor banger' or a 'global house staple'... there's others that enjoy the track as a pleasant blend of what we love from both Cut Copy and Midnight Juggernauts (and isn't that what remixes are really supposed to be? And not always being transformed into b'more house?)

Welcome young and old, class and trash, pure sex and garbage... this is the kickoff for soquitcherbitchen's year-end countdown. The theme for this countdown are the top 20 remixes of 2008. "Best" is a loose word at it's core, so to be more specific, we'll lay some ground rules:

1. remixes only (sorry "Dusk Till Dawn" and "Kelly")
2. remix must have been released or first appeared in 2008
3. only one track per remixer
4a. my blog, my rules, my preferences, my list
4b. comments will always be heard, but not always respected

Essentially, this is a list of remixes that I have been particularly fond of this year, and all have seen extensive stays on my playlists in one form or another. Some from deep in the yearly vaults, some have just seen the light of day. Some melt faces on the dancefloors, others provide chill-ectro-fied bliss. All are my favorites, soquitcherbitcen.

I'll be releasing one track each day up until the new year, and since the top 20 technically wont start until tomorrow... here's something that just didn't quite make the cut. There were so many excellent remixes in this blog-world-proclaimed "Year of the Remix"... I just couldn't find a place in the top 20 for it (which might just tell you how good this list will be (no promises)).

Danger + DiscoSteed

In case you didn't know this yet, DiscoSteed is the dude with the video camera that you might see lurking at many of the bitchenest bangin' events that pass thru the city. He's a videographer, and has shot the likes of MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots, A-Trak, Danger, and now Culture Prophet... all within the last 6 months. If you were at any of those shows, you probably saw him filming (if not for the 10,000W spot light bulb on his camera... haha).



I knew he was at the Danger show (for said reason), but DIDN'T know that he signed on to begin writing for Aussie promoters Trashbags Kids. Here is a video he posted on their blog featuring a video re-edit of "Into the Galaxy" by the Midnight Juggernauts, remixed by Danger. Bored This Week?

Well fear not my fellow Chitown electrobots. Two unnecessary parties are in line for the next couple of nights. Starting things off Wednesday night at the Double Door, Urb Magazine presents the 'Cool By Association Mixtape Release Party'. Apparantly there will be some 'fresh noise' from the likes of DJ Zebo, Murderbot and the Starters DJ's. Notice the guest list at the bottom of the flier... you might've heard of a few of them, Flosstradamus, Crystal Castles, and Kid Sister included.

Then on Thursday we are privileged to be one of the cities on the "Tales of Colt45 Tour" which features Drop The Lime (many know them as Curses!). They're playing at the Hideout, which I have yet to visit, but heard some sweet things about. Chicago will have special guests Brilliant Pebbles, Clique Talk, and DJ Willy Joy on the decks as well.

Cut Copy (and Paste). Every blogger in the world has been posting about Cut Copy like they were in a presidential candidacy race, and over the last week have been revisiting the Aussie troupe de kick-ass due to a recent Midnight Juggernauts remix. Fellow Australian cosmic-synth/astral-organ/electronica stars did a phenomenal spin on "Hearts on Fire" with the kind of epic unconsciousness that every blogger and their dog needs to post about, and they listened.

I've had this on repeat for about a week, and will probably stay in my rotation of songs that I use to get my drunk-on when the weekend calls. Definitely excited to hear this track spun into DJ mixtapes over the course of the summer.

Does anybody else get more excited about a high profile remix (even lo-prof) than of the actual song? Especially in this type of electronica genre where the production value is so crisp and defined that it sometimes leaves the hipster dancers waiting in the wings, and then a bangin remix comes along and restores that energy. Meh, its prolly just me.

I'll get to posting the song later... in the mean time, check any of the blogs on my buddy list to the right, as they've almost all posted the track recently anyway.

Living in a big city is tiring, and I find myself a lot of the time wanting to do nothing but flop on the couch, watch reruns of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and boil my future-children with my laptop while perusing the interwebs for music. And I'd like to share with you my journey:

Things got started after reading another amazing post about Van She, this time from fellow Chicago blogger redthreat. The aussie groupe-deluxe whose inspirations stem from 80's post punk, synth-electro-pop, early 90's grunge, krautrock, etc, will have a new album coming out in august, but their remixes are out and about now, which all kick wombat ass. Here's a few remixes I'm digging atm.

I give their last.fm page a check and started clicking around. End up going to a few places. First was fellow Australian cosmic-synth-indie-rockers Midnight Juggernauts, who's listed under similar artists. This put me in the mood to listen to one of my favorite albums of the last year, Dystopia (aussie release august 2007, domestic comes out this month).

The other path involved a click on a user comment which led me to the blog, Too Many Sebastians (clever name). While browsing his site, I noticed a post on Swedish electro phenom, Din Stalker. Really diggin Herr Reporter and all of its 8-bit glory. Visit his space for more material.

That blog [Too Many Sebastians] got me on an urge to listen to some of that namesake. The Distort edit of SebastiAn's new single followed by Midnight Juggernauts remix on Sebastian Tellier's Divine remedied that storm.

It just so happened that not too far down my playlist is a song that was used as an opener of a dj set by another one of my favorite groups, at my favorite night spot. Simian Mobile Disco playing Sleep Deprivation at Sonotheque (it rocked my socks off).
