bestuvoate: M.I.A. + Cold Blank

best_coldblank

Most of us that read the daily blogosphere heard "Paper Planes" more than a year ago, but in case you were hiding under a rock for most of 07-08, the Pineapple Express trailer ensured the rest of the populous had heard M.I.A's ace introduction as well. And with popularity comes remixes, and holy hell did Cold Blank pwn the shit out of this one.

Cold Blank if you are not aware, are actually made up of two already successful DJ/producers: Mr Gaspar and Big Na$ty. Both are in the same Los Angeles electro scene as previously reviewed Dskotek, are together on the suitably named label Burn The Fire, and regularly host the event of most epic proportions, Smash Disco. Mr Gaspar even contributes to another Chicago blog Hot Biscuits, which in turn is bring Black Holes (another contributor) to the west coast for their first appearance in LA. Pretty exciting stuff right?

Back to the song, it was either this or the Dskotek remix that would've gotten the nod for best Paper Planes remix of the year (Starters here in Chicago will get honorable mention). The track is an over 5 minute continuance of dancefloor mayhem. After the initial buildup with wicked low end synth work, it takes the echoed vocals and pairs it with 90's rave style high ends. It's a refreshing take on a track that has seen waaay too many versions of 4-on-the-floor drums and 0-creativity.

Back in the swing of things...

Sorry for the exuberant lack of posts this month. Between the election, a sorely needed vacation, car trouble and our building's internet and satellite being in the middle of an overhaul... blogging has been left on the back burner. But hopefully this will continue a solid streak of good tunes and event info (started with my last post about Calamity Jane's Black and Pink Ball).

It was a looong time ago when this landed in the inbox, and Chewy Chocolate Cookies caught me at the completely wrong time. While this isn't my favorite remix from CCC, I'm just gitty that they actually included me in their list.

TANZ/TANZ is the first Swedish electronic duo that I've come across who stealth away from the iconic Swedtastic Indie-pop-mnml sound and into something much more fidget house (me likey) ARE FROM EFFIN SWITZERLAND! And I cant wait to hear more from these guys.

So MGMT's "Electric Feel" is close to my favorite track released this year... and when combined with one of my favorite remixers, Dskotek, who's style of up tempo electro house makes this easily the best thing to romp with on the hardwood. .

Mr Mike Weez from Chicago comes back with a more than legit old school remix from Outkast's "B.O.B.". He still has no myspace, but if you knock on his door long enough, maybe he'll wake up and at least get a Virb account.

Thrills has been up on my short list for remixers to watch out for. His catalogue is ginormous as it stands, and this new Claire Hux remix makes the agnostic in all of us start second guess the power of an Halleileuja. [note: head over to beatport to check his new remix of Alex Zelenka's "Bide to Abide"] XD

Got this track last week from OK City duo Trash Yourself. If you like dirty electrotrash sounds, then give this a listen. Especially if you're in the LA area this Thursday 11/20... you'll be able to see Trash Yourself along side /bitchen favorites Dskotek, Teen Wolf, and Big Nasty at The House Lounge.

BONUS: Speaking of Big Nasty, here's his latest bangerang that Hot Biscuits helped reach the top of the hypem charts.

Chitown vs Worst Time Zone Ever

Dodgers Cubs Baseball

The Cubs are tanking, and getting absolutely murdered by the Dodgers. That been putting a lot of stress on not only me, but the whole effin' city. Fans are up in arms, the players failed to show up, the curse might actually excist... I mean total anarchy!!

So what do we do? Go win 2 in LA and then come back to win game 5? It's happened before, but its not likely. I think the best way to resolve this is for everyone to just caaaaaaaaalm down. The city, fans, and media have put waay too much pressure on the Cubs, and it's not gonna work by forcing these last 100 years on the team. Just let it go, embrace the game, and let the chips fall where they may.

Dodgers Cubs Baseball

So here are a group of tracks from collected Chicago and LA based artists/DJs/producers. If these tracks do nothing more than distract you from the embarassing team that has taken the field the last two nights, then cherish it. Anything is better than the last two ball games.

Alternative content

Mp3: A-Trak - Say Whoa (Big Na$ty Remix) (mp3) [LA based Big Na$ty continues improving on his mastery of house breaks, shells out another legit dancefloor banger, remember he already gave 2Pac some posthumous love]

Alternative content

Mp3: The Chemical Brothers - Believe (Mr Mike Weez FeeFiFoFum Remix) (mp3) [Chicago takes a swing back with Mr Mike Weez and his own dancefloor rendition off The Chemical Bros 2005 wax]

Alternative content

Mp3: Rockland - You Can't Stop Californi-Yee (mp3) [A new bloke fron San Fernando is influenced a bit more by the 90's rave sounds, but still able to spin in heavy contemporary house glitches]

Alternative content

Mp3: JDP - Release (mp3) [if you missed the Starters DJs remix of JDP's "Styrofoam Cups"... then you suck, so here's his newest release (no pun intended). Again, I know dick when it comes to hip hop, but if it sounds good, it sounds good. And this ish sounds good]

Alternative content

Mp3: Stereoheroes - Midnight Sons (feat. Teen Wolf) (mp3) [Vegas based Teen Wolf was kind enough to send his mix of Love Lockdown (which you'll still be able to find on the blogs) but I personally just cannot stand the original, so I politely declined. But I'm more than glad to post a collab he did with Stereoheroes]

Alternative content

Mp3: Matt & Kim - It's A Fact (Mano Remix feat Hollywood Holt) (mp3) [ummm... really dont need to say much about this as it's been out a while. BTW, did anyone see the show on Monday? I missed it and am kinda pissed]

Alternative content

Mp3: NightWaves - Even Money (mp3) [i think this song might've been rejected as the romatic interlude piece in Beverly Hills Cop III. Looking forward to Nightwaves refining their Future Disco sounds into something of the likes of Moulinex and Futurecop!]

Alternative content

Mp3: The Hood Internet - Tambourine Reckoning (mp3) [might as well ensure a victory for Chicago in this little cross-country battle by throwing in mash-up masters STV SLV and ABX from The Hood Internet. With a catalogue of well over 200 mash-ups its hard to pick just one track, so I'll play the lazy card and go with something straight from the player]

Ahhh... finally some free time

Quite the week indeed. Finally able to chillax, listen to some new music, and sit down to make some long overdue posts. As you might've noticed on the sidebar, is a new Drop Box widget from SoundCloud. Now any artist or label can submit music in an easy, secure, and hassle free manner. It's still in beta (i think) so there might be hiccups along the way, but anything is better than the old tired methods like zshare, ysi, etc. So try it out kids!

And from the Drop Box to you the readers... are a few songs that peeps have already been kind enough to submit. Lemme just say now, a word of warning... these tracks hold the unfortunate side effect of causing spontaneous human combustion. I know some of you may be thinking that'd be an awesome sight... but I have the 3rd degree self inflicted burns to prove otherwise. Thanks a lot awesome artists... I'll be sending you my medical bills.

Mp3: Brilliants - Tion (IKKI Remix) [this dude from Spain has the distinction of some incredibly insane synths and glitched vocals. That's what we all want in our electro right? Check out IKKI on his myspace for some more hyper paced ish]

Alternative content

Mp3: 2Pac - California Love (Big Na$ty Remix) [this song exploded last week on hypem thanks in part to hot bizzies' coverage. Big Nasty is signed on Burn the Fire Records (same label as Mr Gaspar and Cold Blank among others). Expect a lot more flammables from this LA based deejay... including an A-Trak "Say Whoa" remix!]

Alternative content

Mp3: Panda Riot - She Dares All Things [Did you hear the Panda Riot cover of Paper Planes I posted a few days ago? Same band, same great shoegazing sound, and represtin' the shit out of Chicago. They formed a few years ago in Philly but recently transplanted themselves here in the midwest. They'll be working on a new album over the next several months, so my suggestion would be to pick up their first album to get acquainted with their amazing proven sound before they hit the live venue's again]

Alternative content

Mp3: Late of the Pier - VW (Old School Reunion Remix) [James & Celeste have come a long way in their music production and remixing skills. From LoveStory, to their first self released EP, and now to their latest LotP remix. And their talents and efforts have been rightfully rewarded with a signing to new French label On The Fruit Records. The label is set to bring your ass back to the dance floor... with the help of OSR, who will have a new EP released shortly.]
